Here are some guidelines for retrieving video from some common video-enabled devices.

You can upload videos made on any video-enabled device that can:

  • connect to the internet through wifi – like a laptop with a webcam
  • record to a memory card (SD, SmartMedia, CompactFlash etc.)
  • can connect to a computer via USB (iPhone, iPad 2, Android, Flip)

A wide variety of video file types can be uploaded to the Internet Archive, including: MPEG-1 (.mpg), MPEG-2 (.mpeg), MPEG-4 (.mp4), DivX (avi), WindowsMedia (.wmv), QuickTime (.mov), and RealMedia (.rm). Here are instructions for how to retrive video files from some common video-enabled devices:

1. Android mobile phone

  • Connect the Android phone to a computer with its USB cable
  • On the Android phone click on “Turn on USB storage” and then click “Ok”. The screen will now say “USB storage in use”
  • In the computer finder menu, navigate to the drive called “NEXUS”
  • Then click on the folder “DCIM” and then the subfolder “Camera”
  • You will see a list of videos, click on the one you want to upload.

2. Apple iPhone or iPad 2

  • Connect the iPhone or iPad 2 to a Mac computer with its USB cable
  • On the computer, open the Image Capture application (located in the Applications Folder)
  • In the left hand “Device” menu of the application, select your iPhone or iPad
  • You will see a list of videos, click on the one you want to upload.

3. Video-enabled Digital Camera or Video Camera with memory card

  • Remove the memory card and use a memory card reader that can connect to a computer by USB (we have several in the Board Room – ask an upload volunteer for help)

4. Video-enabled Digital Camera or Video Camera with USB cable

  • If your camera connects to a computer through a proprietary USB cable, it is best to only use it at this event if you can bring the camera, its proprietary cable, and a laptop that is preloaded with the camera driver.

5. Laptop with webcam

  • Make a recording using a video recording / webcam application on your laptop and save the file.
  • Open a browser and follow the Internet Archive upload instructions – navigate to your saved file.

6. A couple of other options… (for in-person event participants)

  • a. Put your video file onto a USB thumb drive and take it to the upload station in the Board Room.
  • b. Email your file to yourself and access it from one of the computers in the upload station in the Board Room.

7. If you get stuck…please ask one of our upload or Cover it Live volunteers for help, and we’ll do the best we can!
