Other Language Archives

• The Archive of the Indigenous Languages of the Americas. AILLA is a digital archive of recordings and texts in and about the indigenous languages of Latin America.
• The Survey of California and Other Indian Languages. The Survey room houses an archive of fieldnotes with an online catalog, and manages a large collection of tapes on American Indian languages.
• The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies. A large library and audiovisual archive on Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories. The website has an online catalog of the collections.
• Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures PARADISEC is a cross-institutional collaborative project for digital archiving and access to Australian researchers’ field recordings of endangered languages and musics of the Asia-Pacific region.
• The Alaska Native Language Center. The major center in the United States for the study of Eskimo and Northern Athabascan languages. The center houses an archival collection of more than 10,000 items, virtually everything written in or about Alaska Native languages, along with significant collections about related languages outside Alaska.
• Digital Endangered Languages and Musics Archive Network. DELAMAN has been set up to form an international network of archives that will stimulate intensive interaction about practical matters that result from the experiences of fieldworkers and archivists, and to act as an information clearinghouse. The Rosetta Project Digital Library is a participating archive.
• Langues et Civilisations à Tradition Orale. The LACITO Archive provides free access to documents of connected, spontaneous speech, mostly in "rare" or endangered languages. At present, the archive contains some 136 documents in 31 languages.

Best Practice Standards

• Electronic Metastructure for Endangered Languages Data. E-MELD is a project to protect endangered language data while developing infrastructure and standards that aid in cross archive collaboration.
• Open Language Archives Community. OLAC is creating a worldwide virtual library of language resources by: (i) developing consensus on best current practice for the digital archiving of language resources, and (ii) developing a network of interoperating repositories and services for housing and accessing such resources. Our Rosetta Project Digital Library resources are described with this set of metadata, and can be searched from this site.
• Dublin Core Metadata Initiative The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative is an open forum engaged in the development of interoperable online metadata standards. The OLAC metadata set for describing language resources is an extension of the Dublin Core metadata set.

Programs That Fund the Documentation of Endangered Languages

• The Endangered Language Fund Provides small grants for language maintenance projects and linguistic field work.
• The Foundation for Endangered Languages. Provides small grants in support of endangered language documentation.
• Documenting Endangered Languages. A joint program of the National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities. Funding is available in the form of one- to three-year project grants as well as fellowships for up to twelve months. At least half the available funding is awarded to projects involving fieldwork.
• Hans Rausing Endangered Languages Program (HRELP) Provides large grants to teams of researchers in support multi-year endangered language documentation projects.
• Dokumentation Bedrohter Sprachen (DoBeS) Funds projects to "collect, process and archive linguistic and cultural data for (at least) one endangered language lacking sufficient documentation.

Other Linguistic Organizations and Resources

• The Linguist List. LINGUIST List maintains a web-site with over 2000 pages and runs a mailing list with over 21,000 subscribers worldwide.

• The Ethnologue. An encyclopedic reference work cataloging all of the world’s 6,912 known living languages.

• The Linguistic Society of America (LSA) LSA plays a critical role in supporting and disseminating linguistic scholarship both to professional linguists and to the general public. The society sponsors an annual conference, and publishes the journal ''Language'' quarterly.
